Flat Roof Extension Firestone EPDM Ballast System | Giffnock, Glasgow
What was the issue:
The customer contacted us as their flat roof on their home had begun to leak, the roof had a large sky light roof window, three chimneys and was covered in Felt. The material had visible signs of aging and like with a number of felt roofs had cracked due to weather changes in hot and cold months, with visible leaking in the joins. The roof was already fitted a layer of insulation, meaning fixing anything to the roof below would be challenging.
How we resolved it:
How did we resolve it: We installed a Firestone EPDM Ballast system; this system was chosen as it would not require any fixings into the existing roof. Firstly, raggles were cut into all of the chimneys, to allow the rubber to be taken into the chimney, to ensure a watertight seal, in a usually problematic area. Then the underlay is layered over the whole roof, providing a cushion under the rubber membrane, this allows the ballast stones to sit on top of the rubber without causing any damage to the roof. The Firestone EPDM rubber membrane is then installed across the whole roof and dressed around the upstand of the Skylight Roof Window, three chimneys, and under two rows of slate roof tiles on the adjoining roof, to ensure a complete watertight finish. Finally, the ballast stones were spread across the whole roof, giving the roof a slower drainage system, protecting the rubber from the UV rays and high wind scenarios. The roof was finished with bespoke Firestone Ballast Trims, giving the roof a perfect finish and making it watertight.
